About Michael DeYoung Photography - A commercial professional photographer specializing in adventure, mountain sports, fitness, and lifestyle photography creating images from New Mexico, Alaska, and elsewhere for advertising, corporate, and editorial clients. I am based out of Taos, NM and Anchorage, AK.
How I Got Here. I’ve always been fascinated with light and weather and how they play upon the landscape. As an Eagle Scout out hiking, camping, paddling, skiing, watching wildlife and otherwise playing in the landscape myself, I’d always try to capture the images in my mind. Then I discovered photography. My girlfriend had a vintage Voigtlander and I fell in love (with both the camera and its owner who is now my wife.) The camera’s broken light meter forced me to learn exposure the hard way. That early experimentation, along with my training as a meteorologist with the Air Force, laid the foundation for a successful career as a profession outdoor photographer. I cut my teeth as a pro in Alaska - my home for 18 years. Here I was able to use my adventure skills to get to, understand, and capture the look, feel, and emotion of being in the outdoors.
Sustainable Office Supports Environment. The sun powers our sustainable home and home office at 7,400 feet outside of the adventure and ski town of Taos, New Mexico. Natural materials, basic physics, and modern passive solar design provide 95% of heating and cooling. Mac Pro, laptops, cinema screens, printers, power packs, wireless internet and lights – all powered by the sun. Why do this? We know renewable energy can and does work and we are committed to helping others learn more and to recognize that this is attainable.
